homogenized world market and the dominance of global corporations is not absoluetly true and
is a relative idea. Meaning that homogenization can only be practiced or desired upto a certain
extent and for a set of commodities. While it is true that global products are increasing
worldwide, variations in products of certain kinds of (eg. food ) is still needed to woden market
reach. For eg Mcdonalds marketing strategy and the kind of food it provides varies from one
region to another. In China it serves a yingyang burger to appeal to the public. For the Indian
market it provided an entore vegetarian line of food and so on. One single global product in this
case would never have made Mcdonalds a household name. Similar is the example of certain
automobile comapnies. While companies that cater to the elites can provide a homogenized
product like the Rolce Royace, companies that cater to the middle class generally have to adhere
to the consumers needs and go for GLOCAL products now i.e. one global product with
variations according to global needs. Hence we cannot fully say that multinational corporations
have become obsolete.

has brought the entire world together and the barriers to information exchange have vanished. It

5 Reasons Why We Need A New Perspective on Consumption.
The concept of 'Sustainable Consumption' came from the simple insight about the limits of our ecology to sustain our burgeoning population; as one African elder summarized the meaning of sustainable consumption - 'Enough. for all. forever.'
However, what is enough? Is their a limit to nature's ability to provide and our ability to find newer uses? Are we (humans) really capable of 'controlling' the nature? If we are a part of nature too, what 'should be' the limit to our curiosity?
Questions of ecology and consumption are defining our zeitgeist today. However, before hoping to arrive at the 'holy grail' of sustainability, we need to understand the context of consumption.
Globalization, 24*7 media and technological advances have fundamentally altered the way we consume products, services and information.
In these series of 4 articles, I will look at 4 key perspectives that would drive the sustainable agenda.

Sustainable Development
Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It is a framework for understanding development that considers economic, social, and environmental factors. Current production and consumption patterns are unsustainable and will require two planets by 2050 if unchanged. Sustainable development policies aim to balance short-term gains with long-term impacts across sectors through a mix of market reforms, regulations, and community initiatives. No single policy can achieve sustainability alone; a critical mass of coordinated global and local actions is needed.
Sack gardening and Navajo willows to combat desertification and poverty
Poor people living in difficult conditions can easily produce fresh food by gardening on sacks. It can be recommended to create tunnels with drought-tolerant Navajo willows to improve the gardening conditions (shadow, air humidity). More yield equals less poverty and less desertification.
Development aid delivery in barrels
In all the drylands harvested water should be stored in big barrels. Thousands of barrels are destroyed in the industry. It would be nice to save these barrels for aid delivery to developing countries. They should be made available for rural people to create possibilities to produce fresh food in kitchen gardens.

homogenized world market and the dominance of global corporations is not absoluetly true and
is a relative idea. Meaning that homogenization can only be practiced or desired upto a certain
extent and for a set of commodities. While it is true that global products are increasing
worldwide, variations in products of certain kinds of (eg. food ) is still needed to woden market
reach. For eg Mcdonalds marketing strategy and the kind of food it provides varies from one
region to another. In China it serves a yingyang burger to appeal to the public. For the Indian
market it provided an entore vegetarian line of food and so on. One single global product in this
case would never have made Mcdonalds a household name. Similar is the example of certain
automobile comapnies. While companies that cater to the elites can provide a homogenized
product like the Rolce Royace, companies that cater to the middle class generally have to adhere
to the consumers needs and go for GLOCAL products now i.e. one global product with
variations according to global needs. Hence we cannot fully say that multinational corporations
have become obsolete.

has brought the entire world together and the barriers to information exchange have vanished. It

So, let us create the power to change things, let us take action, following all those who already take action to produce their own food, e.g. the ever-growing group of the so-called city farmers.<br />A new dawn?
